Dr. Alexey Moskalev is a Professor, Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biology, the Head of the Laboratory of Geroprotective and Radioprotective Technologies in the Institute of Biology of Federal Research Center ‘Komi Scientific Centre’ of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Head of the Department of Ecology of the Syktyvkar State University named after Pitirim Sorokin.

Academic Education

B.S./M.S. (Biology, Animal Physiology), Syktyvkar State University, Syktyvkar, Russia (1999);

Ph.D. (Radiation biology), Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia (2001);

D.Sc. (biol.) (Radiation biology), Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia (2004).

Research activities

He is focusing on the effect of low dose ionizing radiation on lifespan and aging of Drosophila strains with defects in apoptosis, DNA repair, and defense genes. He is also studying mechanisms of aging, longevity and stress resistance in animal models, including DNA repair, heat shock proteins, NF-kB, Tor- and PI3K-signaling cascade, apoptosis.  He revealed the geroprotective and synergistic effects of different inhibitors of PI3K, TOR, NF-kB using fruit flies Drosophila as a model. In Drosophila and C. elegans model his group with collaborators founded geroprotective effects of fucoxanthin and ibuprofen. Alexey participated in the work of identifying mechanisms of exceptional longevity of Myotis brandtii bats and grey whale mammalian species. He was a contributor in creating a database of biomarkers of aging Digital Ageing Atlas and databases of anti-aging drugs Geroprotectors.org and DrugAge.

He is the author of more than 100 publications in the area of genetics of aging and longevity and radiation genetics.

Networking

He is a member of the editorial boards of Ageing research reviews, Aging, Biogerontology, Frontiers in Genetics of Aging, Aging and disease, Gerontology, Advances in Gerontology.

He established the series of the International Symposiums “Genetics of Aging and Longevity” (Syktyvkar 2008, 2010, Moscow 2012, Sochi 2014), “Biomedical Innovation For Healthy Longevity” (Saint Petersburg 2016), “Interventions to extend healthspan and lifespan” (Kazan 2018), “Longevity interventions 2020” (Ekaterinburg, 2020).

Vice President of the Gerontological Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Head of the Komi branch of Vavilov Society of Genetics and Breeders, Member of the Central Council of the Society.

He received:
